Asylum (1972) Review

Asylum (1972) Also known as: House of Crazies Directed by: Roy Ward Barker Production Company: Amicus Productions Streamed on: Amazon Prime

The possibility of new employment can be an exciting adventure to anyone starting in their field. Dr. Max Reynolds arrives at the door of the Asylum with this prospect. However, before he can officially start he is put on a test to guess which of the patients was the former Dr. B. Starr whose position he would be taking. Each patient is a short story leading to the end of his trial. However, hearing their stories you must wonder are they really crazy or guilty? Or... Are they victims of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Hmm...

The first story is 'Frozen Fear'. Is Bonnie, Dr. Starr? Her story dives into voodoo and how everything doesn't go according to plan no matter whose perspective you view it from.

The second is 'Weird Tailor'. The tale of a tailor trying to save his business to meet the rent by deadline. Arriving at most opportune time is Peter Cushing with a special request can the tailor fill it?

The third is 'Lucy Comes to Stay'. Barbara informs the staff that she is sane but you need to get information from Lucy. Lucy is mischievous and plotting. However is 'Lucy' really the one to blame?

The last story is 'Mannikins of Horror'. A former doctor creates miniature scale "dolls" in the likeliness of people. However, who really is pulling the strings or umm...twisting the gears here. So you have these four which is it? Tune in to find out who it is.

My thoughts: Interesting and well executed. I think for me personally the second and third stories engaged me the most. Cohesive plots, strong characters, memorable settings, integral theme, intuitive plot, and overall well executed.

Final Score: 9/10–Morgana
