Black Christmas (2019)
Directed by: Sophia Takal
A group of sorority sisters are being accosted by a mysterious man in a dark robe and mask. He's picking them off one by one but why? Riley Stone is our central protagonist who suspects there are multiple people responsible. Will Riley solve the mystery or will the mysterious man check her off on his target list?
Pros: Definitely modern interpretation on the classic. Cohesive. Story moved quickly. The targeted audience was thoroughly considered. The characters, story, music, and ambiance hit the YA mark. Strong story line about women being united.
Cons: It's not the original. Not even remotely. I can't reveal too much to spoil the story. It doesn't really go with the original. The beautiful cinematography was lost in translation. I did like that it was a text verses a call pretty much hits the timeline right. I didn't care for the baddies. It felt pretty predictable to understand who were the key roles in the antagonists. Kris was a strong character.
It wasn't entirely terrible. I just wish they gave this a different name and stepped away from the original because it isn't remotely loosely based on the story. You get some hints of it but not quite. One kill mirrored the original slightly. There was a clear vision on the intended and targeted audience. Everything from setting, story, characters, and overall ambiance was molded to fit that scheme. It just got lost on me from seeing the original first.
