Casper's Halloween Special Review

Updated: Apr 9

Casper's Halloween Special (1979) Directed by: Carl Urbano and Chris Cuddington Streamed on: Boomerang

👻It's near that time of year again! Where we used to prepare our costumes and treat bags for the happiest time of the year. Halloween!!!🎃 Readying ourselves to hit as many towns and show off our costumes! It's exciting and nostalgic.

Casper is a special I remember from childhood. I obviously saw the rerun special of it in the 80s and so forth.

Casper wants to join in on the festivities unfortunately for him Harry Scary and his mischievous buddies have their hearts set on tricks more so than treats. Willing to hit anyone who hits their path sparing no one and using Casper as their crutch. Rather powerful message throughout this special about making the most of what you have. Valuing anyone no matter who they are. There's also the part about being appreciative of what you have. My big takeaway from it is no matter who you are; If you have your heart in the right place you can change. Thus causing a positive domino effect. 👻

🍬🍫 9.5/10 Creepy cute points: for the costumes and nostalgia. Even the baddies song is filled with nostalgic Halloween imagery. 🎃🎃🎃 Nostalgic treat all around. 9/10 overall I enjoyed the vintage aesthetic. I loved the message. I love the late 70s cartoon vibe this had.

So, this special appeared on this review blog about 2 years ago. It was in the Halloween Favorites section for Boomerang TV. I figured tis the season and it was due for a rewatch.

For premise purposes:

Casper is excited to join in on this spooky occasion and be able to trick or treat just like everyone else. However, ol Hairy Scarey and his two buds love this night for the trick aspect to it! How will Halloween turn out for Casper?

I love this special. It is one I remember loving as a kid (I watched reruns). It is cute with just the right vintage horror nods. However, it took every ounce of strength not to try to Mary Poppins myself into the TV. I didn't like how classism existed in this. Who treats kids like this???? It was a cute movie. One that has a lesson that still is relevant sadly. I love this and I will definitely revisit this again before the month ends with my family.

4.9/5
