From Hell Review

From Hell [2001]

Directed by: The Hughes Brothers

It's 1888, and a somber night unlike any other. There's chatter coming from a group of women unbeknownst to them that they are the latest targets in the eyes of a nefarious man. The floor on this and like many other nights is wet from the rain before on the cobblestone road. It isn't until later that the events really start to take hold. There's an evil afoot! An evil, unlike any other something that can truly be unleashed from the bowels of hell and it's blood lust seeks these women and his crimes he commits lead him to earn the title "Jack the Ripper".

As each woman in this circle slowly starts to turn up as victims in the next crime scene more ghastly than the last; Inspector Abberline is called in. His way of finding solutions may not be as widely received on his staff but he might be the right man to catch the fiend who is perpetrating these crimes! It seems the plot of these women's demise might be coming from the most unexpected source! Will Inspector Abberline be able to stop Jack before he get's to the last woman? Tune in and find out!

Grim, dark, and different is how I would incorporate my thoughts on this film. I can't say how close to the truth this is but from research it turns out this was loosely based on Alan Moore's graphic novel of the same name. The costumes were excellent, the story seemed pretty concise up to the point of involvement with Mary and the Inspector. I like the elements of suspense and mystery and this horror thriller had it. This entangled web of lies and truth needs to be sorted out and perhaps Inspector Abberline can solve the big mystery? Maybe not.

This was a film that has been on my 'to watch list' for years. I always wanted to check it out but seemed to forget it. I can't say whether it met my expectations but it definitely adds perspective. Interesting, that's about all I can say on it. If you like minimal gore, some mystery and suspense, with light elements of horror check this one out.
