Hocus Pocus Review

Hocus Pocus [1993]

Directed by: Kenny Ortega

On Hallows Eve, a local legend is told in Max's class about three witches. Max Dennison dismisses this as just another story not realizing that there's truth to this cautionary tale! He soon finds himself at the center of this tale with the life of not only his but more importantly his sister Dani's at risk! The Sanderson sister's rise from rest and are ready to whisk away Dani. What will become of Dani and Max?

For 27 years, this film has been watched and rewatched. There's an air of nostalgia to this film ; almost like a time capsule of 1993. The setting, cinematography, humor, costumes, characters, plot, and songs all work in accordance together.

I think the appeal of this film is for the last 27 years we would watch it often around this time of year.

We'd turn on the TV and the air of Halloween was there in forms of this film and others.

I realized for me. I appreciated the roles of Max and Dani. That no matter how old you get your younger sister or sibling is irreplaceable. That he would stop at nothing to protect her when the opportunity rose. I think for me personally that's why I loved this film. In a way, this respect between siblings all grievances go out the door the moment they are in trouble. That no matter what you have each other. A best friend before you even knew the definition. A friend who will love you be there for you when the going gets tough. I finally understood why in my regard this film meant so much to me growing up.

If you're looking for nostalgia, a sense of mystery, 90s humor, and plenty of tricks and treats give this one a shot!

9/10
