Jonathan Livingston Seagull (1973) Review

Updated: Jul 25, 2024

Jonathan Livingston Seagull (1973)

Directed by: Hall Bartlett

Today's review comes with a little backstory. My father would go to our public library and searched endlessly for a copy of this film. It was one he considered a personal favorite. As fate would have it he would find it on VHS and finally be able to view it again. My father wore out that copy until he was able to order it on DVD years later. I never understood the initial draw to this film. After viewing it for myself I finally do.

My father is a profound individual. One I still continue to learn from. This film is beautifully executed with flawless cinematography, breathtaking elegance from nature, and enough bits of wisdom one can takeaway. The score marries the visuals beautifully.

The story follows Jonathan a seagull who continues to push his limits. While others conform to what's expected he tests his own limits. At first afraid, but growing among the right teachers on his own journey. He learns to believe in his own willpower and to continue to seek the heights of personal growth and cherish the wisdom it teaches him. Often times seen as a troublemaker, Jonathon is brave and profound. So here's to our own Livingston seagull within us. Who grows within the supportive branches of our loved ones (whether by blood or chosen) who tell us to not be afraid to always seek the right to push our own limits. To grow in our wisdom and to help others to believe in theirs. To live in certainty that we can seek new heights if only we trust in our own limits.

Profound and motivating. Thanks Pops ❤🦉🕊🦅
