M*F*K*Z (2017) Review

M*F*K*Z [2017]

Mutafukaz

Directed by: Guillaume Renard and Shoujirou Nishimi

Streamed on: Netflix

Life ain't easy for just any mfkz, roaches got it better than you! Seeing a dead body on the floor, is common in this cesspool of a city. The only light is of Mary and a stranger who connects with you subconsciously in this desolate city. Dark Meat City is a cesspool filled with blood, dust, broken dreams. Hey, man it's home. 🤷‍♀️ To have any hope or hold onto a ray of light seems like a pipe dream. The shadows reveal more truth than meets the eye. At every turn it feels like time is racing towards you. Soon you'll be that chalk outline on the pavement. To dream in this harrowing city... feels like a lost hope.

As some mysterious men in black suits catch up with our protagonist, Lino (AngeLino) his inner psyche starts to break through the other side. There's something up... What's the deal with the pigeons? Will the gangs claim Lino and Vinz? How is Vinz okay with a constant fire on his head? As the plot feels like it's coming to a grave halt you slowly understand Lino's journey from bottomless misfortune is only about to get worse or...is it?! Tune in to this neo noir anime to find out!

I have to say, I really was pleasantly surprised. I picked this one at random. If it has noir elements and it does it will hook me in. The animation was purely fitting from frame by frame with a desolate mood but it fit. At least for me it hooked me in. I loved the sci-fi twists and threads it carried. There are elements of horror too. The only downfall was the nails on a chalkboard cat character Willy. He was the worst. 🤦‍♀️ I got past his character and was able to fully appreciate the film. If you love noir, gangsta's quoting Shakespeare, luchadores, sci-fi/dystopian feels, and a good story of the little guy vs the big guy give this one a try!
