Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Directed by: Henry Selick
Produced by: Tim Burton
Jack, the pumpkin king searches for meaning to his monotonous spooky existence. He finds it ironically in winter wonderland. Jack finds the solution to his emptiness he feels in Christmas town but is it enough? He tries to share it with the others but they can't seem to grasp it since all they know is Halloween. While he hopes to share his newfound experience with others there are some that have other plans. Will Jack every find the riddle to the emptiness he feels?
It wouldn't be Halloween or Christmas without the Pumpkin King (Jack). Ironically, I never got to watch it as a kid. It wasn't until much later that I saw it. Like Jack, my mind was completely blown away. The mood and charisma this film has completely captured my attention. It was rhythmic and the music perfectly fitting. It is deeply enchanting! It is no wonder it has a cult following.
For years, and years to come Halloween town calls to those of us who love this time of year! The happiness we find in our parties, the sweets we have, and the general togetherness we find. This film is about finding yourself. Jack finds that what he really wanted was inside him all along. It's friends and a new found love at his side he so fittingly finds in Sally. Sally brings a light to him and he to her that they were missing. It's as if the film is tied into finding that last puzzle piece. It's beautifully poetic and it wouldn't be Halloween without the Pumpkin King.
