Song at Midnight Summary

Song at Midnight (1937) Directed by: Ma-Xu Weilbang This film is credited as being the 1st Chinese Horror film. The tale of Song Danping is loosely inspired by the 'Phantom of the Opera'. Tune in to this one if you want to see a version of the Phantom with a political message. Danping is the anti-hero in this version persecuted for his alliance he recounts his story to Sun Xiao Ou (the protagonist) in this story on how he came to look this way. Without giving anymore spoilers the title ties in with Danping's singing at midnight and strangely catching the ear of his love interest. My thoughts: This one was hard to peg for me. I found it vividly haunting and well crafted but after watching it twice I don't have an opinion on it. It's a romantic tale that is tragic. I loved the cohesive tie of the score with the film. I loved the idea of the story. I still can't place how I feel overall.

Final Score: 5.5/10-Morgana
