The Eyes of My Mother (2016)
Directed by: Nicolas Pesce
On a small farm, a loving family tends to their animals. At first glimpses into the film there is a sense of peace in Francisca's little niche. This is a horror movie for a reason is it not? This peaceful setup is about to get horribly disturbed and the repercussions of this will forever haunt Francisca! A stranger finds this sweet and humble abode and takes this opportunity to cruelly twist and play with the fate of this families fate. How will this affect Francisca and her family?
There was a balance of barbaric and soft tones. The severity of loss and emptiness and a teeter and totter effect of all of this. The severity of the scenario that played before this is crude. It obviously leaves an everlasting ripple of tension in the relationship of the family. Francisca is left to fend for herself in a way after these events and those that follow. She reacts in the way she only knows how or... was this side inside her all along waiting for such an opportunity to come forward.
It was an interesting film. One that shows the severity of loss and being left to bear it on your own. Then again, there's also the duality aspect of the killer instincts that manifest or remain from these actions. Francisca remains to still be in the process of learning about the world. However, with what lies in the shed as her teacher one must wonder if what it says is just affirmation of what she hides behind it and that dwells inside of her.
