The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) Review

The Hunchback of Notre Dame [1923]

Directed by: Wallace Worsley

Production Company: Universal Pictures

Beauty comes in many forms. To the untrained eye it would miss it in the character that is flawlessly portrayed by #lonchaney . He watches as life bears freedom down below. He longs to be there.

Unfortunately, for him not everyone would be as kind as his friend the Archdeacon and later on friend Esmeralda. His sweet nature is tested when the Archdeacon's brother (Jehan Frollo) wants the affections of Esmeralda. Fueled by lust he lurks for his opportunity to make her his.

Of course, Esmeralda has her eyes set on Captain Phoebus. Life can be very lonely with the only happiness of your companion, the bells of Notre Dame. Frollo hatches quite the scheme to see if he can finally have Esmeralda. Her kindness clashes his at every turn. Enraged Frollo keeps scheming. Will he win her over? Who will stop him? Will Phoebus and Esmeralda ever find their happiness? What lessons can we find out from Quasimodo? Tune in, to see how their stories all pan out.

I will be honest. I have never seen this up until now. I've only seen the Disney version. I didn't care for it but I do care for this one. It missed the mark in comparison. This has a fragile canvas that was beautifully brought to light by excellent cinematography, a talented cast, heartwarming theme on beauty, and overall a great film. Frollo was one of those characters that just creeped me out. The actor in this did a good job because he still creeps me out. Frollo is repulsive slime in so many ways. 😑😂 I love that ending! I think I cheered a lot. 🤣 😆
