The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Written by: Washington Iring
Ah, the story of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman has been retold for several years now. I'll be looking at two other versions of this story but first let's take a look at where it all began. I'm sure you're familiar with the story itself. The unfortunate demise of the town's overtly superstitious schoolmaster Ichabod Crane. In hope's to finally get ahead in life he sets his eyes on Katrina Van Tessel the daughter of the wealthiest man in their city. His heart is full with hope's to finally move ahead when it's intervened by Brom Van Brunt who also has his affections for Katrina. The town gathers for a harvest party and it wouldn't be a fun evening without some ghost stories, right?! Sleepy Hollow has quite the assortment of ghost stories the housewives share preying on Ichabod's fear. The story of the fabled Headless Horseman haunts his mind. Heartbroken and dismayed Ichabod rides away on his somewhat noble stead...His fate is sealed when his story takes a dramatic twist! With the haunted hessian on his heels his fate is ultimately sealed. What I didn't know was the story recounts rumors of Ichabod's fate by the townspeople.
The story was beautifully articulate. Although, not very long each page kept me completely transfixed! The character development was descriptive and to the point. There was no plot holes. The setting you can vividly imagine it. Irving created a timeless classic that has been retold for several years now. It's easily one of my favorite books. Now, it's up to you to determine what really happened to poor ol' Ichabod Crane.
