Matrix [1999]
Directed by: Lana Wachowski, Lilly Wachowski
The time is now 1999. The world as I knew it was riddled in a monotonous state of breakfast, shove textbooks into backpack, and run to catch the bus. High school was a place where everything seemed etched in time. That soon was to change. There was buzzing in the hallways of my school over something new that just hit the theater's! Everyone and I mean E V E R Y O N E was talking about the Matrix. I couldn't escape it! So, I decided then and there to just not watch it. 🤷♀️ I couldn't avoid spoilers or little hints of what happened so I decided to just not watch it.
The time is now 2021. There sat The Matrix in my Watch list. It was there for several month's I figured now is a good as time as any to watch it. So, I found the comfiest spot on my weathered brown coach. I threw up my feet over the arm rest and grabbed my coffee ready to take in what I was about to watch. I was FINALLY ready to view it.
I can see moment's in why my school was busy talking about the Matrix. It was something so new for us in the 90s. It was something so different. I'm glad I took this long to watch it. I don't think I'd take away the same perspective from a watch in my teens.
Much like Neo, I was comfortable in my fabric of existence. Reality being pizza from the cafeteria, doodling on my notebooks, and going to the mall. I wouldn't care to have my then reality shifted in perspective.
This film earns it's place in the 1001 films you need to watch before you die, rightly so! It presents one thing and when you're comfortable it is suddenly ripped from underneath your feet. Question everything. Question your surrounding and your existence. What is reality? Is it the one you hide behind in a monotonous routine? Is it the one you never knew you had? So what will it be? Blue or Red pill. The choice is yours, my friend. The choice is yours. 9/10
