Witches (1990)
Directed by: Nicolas Roeg
Be careful what you see at face value. Behind those endearing eyes may lie a witch in disguise! Warn's Luke's sweet grand-mama. She fills his mind with stories that she remembers from her youth. The strange disappearance of a girl from her past and the possibility of a witch she suspects. When an unfortunate event leaves Luke to be placed in the hands of his dear Grandma's care; they travel to get away from it all. Not before Luke's Grandma falls ill. Hoping a change of scenery will settle things fine they travel to a beautiful hotel. The hotel also attracts attention of several women and a few families too! The women gather together in the ballroom for their latest convention for Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Their elegant speaker is the lovely Eva Ernst!
Luke feels something not quite right about the group of ladies. What could possibly be hiding behind their well kept hair, and painted faces? Hmm... tune in to this film and solve the mystery!
When I think of films that used to terrify me as a kid this is one of them. I couldn't get past the transformation scene of Huston's character. I think what scared me the most about this film at the time was the fear of the unknown. Knowing that among us could be people who hide behind the facades of teachers, neighbors, and well any friendly disposition. Knowing that they want to potentially bring mortal harm to someone just terrified me as a child.
Effective jump scares for the time. Some of the effects may be outdated for some. I love the Jim Henson style of the characters. Cute story about a boy finding bravery in rather strange circumstances. I loved the story after finally being able to finish it lol It was endearing and I loved the companionship in Luke and his Grandma. Huston brought mystique to her character. Humorous, great plot, setting, and overall film.
