Young Frankenstein Review

Updated: Jul 17, 2024

Young Frankenstein [1974]

Directed by: Mel Brooks

This is a film that is deeply loved and referenced. It even earned its spot on the #1001filmsyoumustseebeforeyoudie list. Seeing as I'm making my way through it; I figured I would give it a rewatch it definitely deserved.

A long time ago, I had a friend (who I no longer speak to) who killed this film for me. She would always rewatch this film and even though I brought a new film to watch it was this or Spaceballs. I lost track after 10x of rewatches. I didn't get it 🤷‍♀️ So, for the longest time I avoided this film. I know... GASP 😱

It wasn't until I came across this list and years have passed since I've seen it. I figured now, was a good as time as any to view it. I also have seen the Frankenstein Legacy box set.

It holds the test of time. There is a magic about it. I picked up all the references to the prior films. It's shot beautifully and pays it's homage to the films before it. It is magical. I don't think I appreciated it as much as I do today as a writer and a fan of classic horror. I found my aesthetic draw to the cinematography. It's magnetizing and the wit holds it together to create something new. It's no surprise to me as a critic why Young Frankenstein holds it's spot as a film you need to watch. It's score, humor, and cinematography are worth it alone. The ending speech from (Boyle's) the monster really made the film a instant must own for me. As one of my favorite characters in films and horror, the monster finally got his say. Albeit cheeky still endearing. 💜 Must watch and I'm glad I waited to watch this one. I truly appreciate it for what it is now. 💜

10/10

I grew up basically in the middle of nowhere and I used to have a copy on VHS. Just dated myself. And it was amazing. I love this

No worries. :) I saw this soooo long ago and didn't have an appreciation for films as I do now. It is a masterpiece. I definitely need to add it to my collection. Thank you, for your support. :) -Morgana
