'Animas (2018) Review

Ánimas [2018]

Directors: Laura Alvea and Jose F. Ortuño

Language: Spanish

Streamed on: Netflix

Friends can be our first security blankets when the world around us seems meaningless and lost. They give us the support we miss at home. Throughout the film a young woman starts to lose a sense of reality when her childhood friend begins to gain more confidence and independence. A new person who they can connect to comes into their life and slowly the friend becomes background. There's something not right about reality and trying to make sense of it causes multiple fractures in their realities. Will their friendship ever reconnect or will the shadows of doubt and resentment claim tragically another life?

There were many ways I wanted to present this review. In doing so, I felt I'd spoil the "reality" of the film. What is reality? Who is in control? You'll have to find out and gather your own opinion on this interesting horror thriller. I feel some inspiration was drawn from Psycho and Fight Club. There's a lot of interesting perceptive themes in this film. I stumbled on this rather randomly. It's a good film and I'm astonished on the low ratings it has. Maybe you're not meant to understand it but to truly question it. To truly analyze it to understand who prevails.

Excellent cinematography, cast, and love the constant threshold of reality. Friends come and go, it's true...but with if... some don't want to leave they stay with you. They stay in your memories and they never part. I really want to note a little thing I picked up on but it would spoil your take on it. I loved this and not a lot of others did. This is a film you have to pay close attention to. There's truth in the frames you just have to decide what that truth is.

8.3/10
