Anna Review

Anna (2019)

Directed by: Luc Besson

The wallpaper on the walls is tattered. The tear stained table is caked with dirt. You can almost smell the stench in the air. There's fly's buzzing around the room that have probably seen the abysmal pit that is Anna's life or at least what it has become. The room is filled with echoes of Anna's cries from previous fights and struggles at the mercy of the jerk she finds herself with. Yet Anna still holds onto a dream she will one day escape this cesspool. Who will hear her cry? Coincidentally, her path is crossed by a handsome spy named Alex. He presents her with a choice. It's either this or he ends it there for her. What does she choose? Anna chooses the path of a KGB assassin with Alex who trains and prepares her. All the while their chemistry is obvious. Anna is once again set up for a new path this time with a promise. If she completes her assignments in 5 years she will be released and free to continue her life; at least that's what her mentor and coordinator Olga promises.

Anna builds quite a name for herself in these 5 years. She completes every assignment swiftly. Using her intelligence and looks to get the best of her targets. It isn't until she's on her latest assignment that her journey is once again intervened. While on assignment she is caught by the CIA. Now, she has moments to decide her fate either help them complete their task in assassinating the head of KGB or they take her in. She elects to help them in hopes to get out free. Anna begins a double life helping the CIA and the KGB. Will Anna ever leave the path of blood at her heels or will she lose her freedom entirely? I guess you'll have to see how Anna's journey ends.

Brilliant, interesting, and fast paced. I really enjoyed this story. I did get a bit confused with timelines but after I sorted it out it was consistent. I really found myself rooting for Anna and her freedom. You never know who to trust and neither does Anna. The ending is great. Give this a shot if you like a good thriller with meaning.
