My culture can be summed up with one word, family. It's about the elders before us who paved the way. The love placed in every stern lecture, hot soup, loving embrace, and warm meal. It's the parent's who worked multiple jobs or strenuous jobs to provide through their sacrifice for their children. It's the love stitched into everything they do. It's about tradition and it's about family. Coco hits the mark, perfectly.
When my Abuelita passed I felt a hole in my heart. Then I rewatched Coco and Mama Coco reminds me of her. Her soft spoken voice barely able to be heard. The bronze skin kissed by the sun. The history she has in each wrinkle on her face. My culture comes with their history.
This film illustrates in a sweet and tender form the importance of family and embracing who you are at heart. It's about a boy trying to make sense of his history and his place in it. It's about the value of those you love. How appearances can be deceiving, for the good and bad.
I cry at the end because I hear Mama Coco and I feel I get to hear my Abuelita's sweet voice once more. Hug the one's you love a little extra, tell them you love them, and don't take anything for granted. I love you, Abuelita. This one's for you. ❤ This one's for mi Familia both by blood and those I chose. From the friends who I consider family to those of you who have supported me, this one's for you.
