Green Book [2018]
Directed by: Peter Farrelly
It's 1962, from the costumes to the music it's a time I love to watch but it's smokescreen can not block out the history that's been set many years ago. Tony is a Italian American who comes from the Bronx. He's rough around the edges but he is so because that's how life shaped him for years. He gets the call from Gio and his life is about to change. Dr. Don Shirley is in need of a chauffeur for his tour in the Deep South. Is Tony, the right man for this job? Well, there's one thing I didn't think to mention but I'm sure you'll understand. Dr. Don Shirley is a man of color. Now, these are the 60s and segregation is very real. So, Tony just might be the right man for the job. As time rolls by in the film the men form what seems an unlikely bond. It started at first from a means to bring money to the table but as Tony is about to find out the genius that was Dr. Don Shirley shatters that very smokescreen I mentioned earlier. He hears him perform one night and realizes just how talented he is. Their friendship begins to blossom from music discussion to writing letters for his wife. All this excitement can not hide the fact that it is the 60s and racism is as hideous and toxic as it was back then. Rich people pay Dr. Don Shirley to perform but will not let him use their bathrooms or eat at their establishments. It really is true grotesque irony and very cruel at that. Check out this film to see their test of friendship and how Tony and Dr. Don Shirley manage to defeat the odds and form a friendship.
Racism is a vile thing. I think my big takeaway from this film is how truly impactful music and perspective really is. Music is a thread that brings together all walks in life. It's a powerful vessel. Perspective, it takes to truly understand what the other is living when you see it first hand.
I enjoyed this film. The costumes, setting, music, and generally the theme that friendship should know no color. That two seemingly different people in trying times can form a sense of commradie.
