Lighthouse (2019)
Directed by: Robert Eggers
Two lighthouse keepers are driven on the brink of madness in the least ideal of situations. Will they make it out of this world alive?
After some research and a cuppa, I'm slowly putting the pieces together. There's a lot of themes in play and surrealistic tendencies that fell short at my feet my first watch. I think this film is one giant metaphor on it's play of mythology and other themes it highlights; I found while researching. With research, I'm finally able to understand what the grand takeaway of this film is.
It's the darkness where we hide who we really are to the world. It's our fight with our cognitive perception and reality that plays tricks on us. We have the young ward played by Pattison who is trapped in the least ideal of circumstances. Through further relay of the film we realize who he really is. Then we have Defoe's character who is also another character who isn't honest at all appearances. He's crass and dismissive. Yet, something underlying in Pattison seeks this approval of him. It isn't until he holds fate in his hands and makes it pay for it's cruel plays at reality for him. This causes him to plummet completely out of control and there is no saving him as dominance and control resurfaces it's ugly head. There's one cruel irony after another and as the viewer we are lead to truly look past the surface of this film. It's open to interpretation but there are some unavoidable realities.
There's reality where it isn't always pleasant and there's also reality that once you have what you thought you wanted it might not be what you expected. Thus, propelling you further into madness. Madness it took me a few months to finally write this review because I wanted to gather my thoughts on the film.
It is also currently listed as one of the 1001 films you must watch before you die. I also feel that Pattinson proved that he has range other than sparkly vampire. I think that Dafoe was brilliant as expected. A very surreal and maddening experience can be expected.
8.3/10 Overall
