Onward [2020]
Directed by: Dan Scanlon
Connection is something we as humans yearn for. Some of us connect with the outside world via social media. In this story, we follow the quest of two brothers in a road to self-discovery. We have Ian, the shy and coming of age teenager learning what it is to reach his next level. Then we have Barley, the older brother who clings onto the past. The past of his people were happy times of freedom. Freedom from routine, and a true sense of adventure. So, there you have it a true clash of the old vs the new.
However, it really isn't so minimal as that in a vibrant tale this film presents a quest. A quest to discover magic! As the characters soon find out. The true magic lives within them. Combining both old and new we can really make something magical happen. Of course, we see it presented as two brothers teaming up on a journey of self-discovery in hopes to have one last connection with their father before the sun sets on a new day. Will their journey be a perilous one with adventure lurking around every corner? Will they fail?
The true spirit of the film was a wonderful message wrapped in excellent use of cinematography, characters, humor, and the general spark that makes Pixar work! I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
