Sanford and Son series [1972]
Developed by: Norman Lear (uncredited) and Bud Yorkin
Sanford and Son, follows the story of everyday life through Fred G. Sanford and Lamont.
Around this time over a few years ago, I found out my dear ol dad was diagnosed with non hodgkin's lymphoma. Throughout his treatment we would talk about several things. We would sometimes have breakfast or lunch. I knew how important it was to keep my father laughing. One of the series he enjoyed was this one, Sanford and Son.
My introduction to this series was through my father. I remember several episodes vividly. This series is rich with memorable characters and scenarios. One of my favorite episodes is when Aunt Esther is running in a beauty pageant. Despite Fred's attitude towards her he helps her. The journey through this episode illustrates that at his core he does love his sister in law despite appearances.
Another memorable episode was when Lamont goes through the ups and downs from his first engagement. This episode once again illustrates the love Fred has for his son. Despite all the negative ear worms he tells Lamont leading to the altar. He says them for a reason. He sees something despite the illusion Lamont has. The ending of the episode brings forth the dynamic between Fred and Lamont. That at the end of the day they have each other and each other's backs.
Now, considering today's standards this series might fall under the umbrella of questionable humor. Some of the humor is considered racist. To those of us like my father and myself; this series tells the story of a father and his son. The love of a father for his son. The dynamic of running a business and all the adventures along the way. I enjoy this series. It brings me memories of laughter with my dad. Today's post is a tribute to a series that has brought us laughter when it felt at times hard to find laughter. It brings me memories of watching the series with my pops. 💖
