Silence (2016) Review

Silence (2016)

Directed by: Martin Scorsese

Starring: Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Tadanobu Asano, Ciaran Hinds, and Liam Neeson

It is in Silence you hear the call and it's in silence you keep what matters close to you sacred. This film follows two Jesuit priests journey from Portugal to Nagaski, Japan. Where they are sent on a journey to bring back their lost mentor. The beginning of the film hints to those of us what his fate might already be. The priests are determined to find their mentor. The following scenes brings a haunting image of life in secret trying to protect that which is sacred to you. For those in this film who fell silent it was not an act of defiance but to practice the values they held true. Will the priests find their long lost mentor or will they too, fall silent to the cross of persecution? Tune in and find out.

Their stories that were presented on screen were sad, cruel, and soul crushing. This film was moving. Moving because you see the stories of people who lie in persecution but they never take their eyes from their ultimate goal. A rather selfless and humbled goal that even their priests are moved by their spirit of hope. Although, this is a Scorsese film you know their plea for hope will either prove victorious or tragic. Well, there is plenty of tragedy. The worst for me was when the priest (Garfield) submits to the heavy hand of justice. You feel his pain as he gives in. I felt for his character. Overall, this is a powerful message of hope and mercy. A story seemed doomed from the start but it leaves you with questions as the story draws to a close.
