Spaceballs Review

Spaceballs (1987)

Directed by: Mel Brooks

I first watched this film back in the early 00s. I honestly didn't have an opinion of it since my friend at the time played it religiously. I didn't get the appeal. Fast forward to 2020, when I decided now was a good a time as any to give it a final shot.

In a not so long time ago well...now it kind of is we follow the story of one greedy naive President Skroob; who has mercilessly stolen all the air hoping to steal more! He attempts to steal the Princess of Planet Druidia in hopes of using her as a bargain piece but doesn't count on her own plan to escape an arranged marriage. President Skroob employs one Dark Helmet to bring her to him! Will the President Skroob steal all the air or will his plans be foiled by this delightful cast and the power of "the Schwartz."

I''d like to take a moment to really reflect on this film. So what is the appeal to the film? I think it's the strong humor and satire. I feel the humor really adds a lot to why this film has gotten several re-watches from people who admire it over the years. The casting is gold and quite fitting across the board. We have John Candy as Barf, Joan Rivers as Dot Matrix, Dark Helmet is Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman is Lone Starr, Daphne Zuniga is Princess Vespa, and of course we have Mel Brooks as President Skroob to just list of fragment of the talent in this film. Each actor brings something unique and different to their role. There's some solid one liners that have been heavily referenced throughout these many years. One's I never realized were Spaceballs references.

This film brings nostalgia to it's viewers and admirers. It brings a full proof film poking fun in random places you wouldn't suspect. For example, the sequence with Yogurt was probably my favorite. That "Dink Dink song" was one I have on occasion sang never realizing where it came from. lol I can see the appeal now years later. The characters that graced the screen in a spoof for Star Wars. If you're looking for a nostalgic laugh that has aged rather well in my opinion give this one a shot. You'll slowly begin to understand why many others have loved this film since the 80s.
