The Adventures of Ichabod (1949) Review

The Adventures of Ichabod [1949]

Directed by: Clyde Geronimi, Jack Kinney, James Algar

Narrated by: Bing Crosby

I remember this short airing around this time of year and on Halloween throughout my childhood. I was afraid of this one for years!!Every year, I hoped to overcome my fear but obviously I finally did. 🎃

I look back at now and understand why. There's something about Irving's story combined with the immersive mood and storyboard that pulls you into the tale. When Ichabod goes home you feel like you are too. The trees around him are watching him, the wind can be heard, there's even a foreboding cloud shaped like a hand, all things that are not easily avoided and telling of what's about to happen.

It's withstood the test of time because of the story itself which is well written. The story painted on screen has been painted on our memories of long-ago Halloween nights, sitting in front of a TV, eating our sweets and treats from earlier in the night. We hung onto the story retold by the famous crooner Bing Crosby. This special has it all.

Catchy songs, memorable scenes, and the alluring horror elements that have made its name in Halloween specials. If you haven't seen it. I'd recommend it. If not for just the nostalgia it's definitely worth it.

9.8/10
