The English Games Series Review

The English Game (2020)

Directed by: Julian Fellowes

Network: Netflix

The story of how it all began through every hurdle, challenge, and every key player in the moment where the beautiful game was formed. The English game otherwise known as the gentleman's game started to attract attention. The working class was represented by Darwen who had their interests in playing with the rich elite so to speak. The game belonged to them. As the game started to gain attention and some forms of hoolie's along the way it became bigger than they expected. There lies the challenge. Do the Rich keep it from the everyday man? The working class man that their society is fueled by. The men who push against every boundary to bring bread to the table. Well, I can't say too much to avoid any spoilers. There was much drama along the way and many barriers the Darwen team had. Through every obstacle they learned something about themselves as did Old Etonians (high society). The game was much more than the could ever expect it to be.

It follows the story closely of Fergus "Fergie" Sueter and his mate Jimmy Love who were the first professional players to the sport. There's also a rich back story to Fergie who in the center brought the spirit and heart of this story. The rich story of one young man's hopes to make a name and cement it in history. That he definitely did at least research proves so. The series reflects on his character, the broken home, the underdog trying to save his family from the greed of his father. Will the working man prevail over every barrier along the way? I'll guess you'll have to check this one out.

Given the time frame not much is known so there are some inaccuracies in this series. At least this is what I found in research. They had to bring some drama to fit and attract attention to the series. I was attracted to the series since I am a fan of the beautiful game. I have my teams I root for. I loved the cinematography fit the mood, the costumes were extravagant, The story was rich with spirit and determination, there's enough drama to hold you over your next cuppa or pint if you need it. It's not that long of a series only 6 episodes. Each episode is a piece to overall story and it was well done. I loved this series. It did take me a few tries to finally start it but I did enjoy it. If you love football (soccer), a rich story fueled with passion and determination to excel, and a fortifiable period drama give this one a shot. (Pun intended)
