The Witches 1990 vs The Witches 2020 Review

The Witches [1990]

Directed by: Nicolas Roeg

The Witches [2020]

Directed by: Robert Zemeckis

In my opinion, I think the 1990 film was superior than the remake.

The remake had qualities that definitely gave it a revamp. The original had an air of whimsy to it. I feel it was the casting. Huston was elegant, charming, and memorable with the added scare factor. Hathaway just felt overly campy for my cup of tea. Her performance bordered on the cheese side for me. Where it was easily able to fall at that line for Huston. She tailored her charisma to the role.

Not all was bad in the remake. I personally, liked Spencer as the grandma. She was more memorable to me in the role than Zetterling. That's just my opinion though. I also loved the setting. Everything from cinematography to location tailored to it. I loved the soundtrack more in the remake.

The original just carried a more memorable nostalgic thread to me. I loved the puppets, aesthetic, and casting for the most part. Atkinson of course, was memorable and stands out. We also get a happier ending.

Then again, I haven't read the book so I'm not sure which ending is most accurate. The remake does have a happy ending but in my eyes it's still a bit sad. The casting was okay with the exception of Spencer who was great. The visuals were definitely engaging. The soundtrack was great.

Still after watching it I vaguely remember it. I saw the 1990 film a few months ago before I originally shared this (1/26/2021) and yet I can still picture it. Overall, the original film I enjoyed more than the remake. The remake was just missing something. I still can't place what it is.
