Underworld (2003) Review
Directed by: Len Wiseman
The world around is shaped by the events that lead you down your path. We meet Selene, a death dealer (Vampire) who is fueled with a vendetta against the lycans who tore her family to shreds. At least, this is the narrative her Vampire Elder Viktor has painted for her. She has quite the count of kills under her belt for lycans and today is no different than the last. She's hot on the trail of two lycans when she intervenes their apparent "victim". She isn't aware that they have different reasons for capturing Michael. Will Selene ever discover the truth about her family? Who is Michael and what do the Lycans want with him? As the story unfolds you'll find out who the real troublemakers are. When werewolves and vampires are at war whose side do you choose?
I remember when this film came out and I was completely drawn to the vampires. The aesthetic appealed to me back then. However, giving this a re-watch I think my allegiance has changed. While the vampires live in luxury and enjoy a somewhat comfortable life the werewolves or lycans are forced into hiding. Fending for themselves to bring truth to light. The truth of a cruel destructive plot against them by the elders themselves. Sacrificing his daughter to the sun because she was with child. What child you may ask? The child of a lycan. who is forced to watch his loves demise. Now, Lucian wants to set the record straight and bring justice to his people.
I have to admit over these years this film lost the initial draw to me. I used to really love this film after a few rewatches it just lost the spark for me. I did appreciate the new perspective I gained from the rewatch. It does have a great cast and the cinematography was true for it's time period in 03'. There's some gore notably and I think the big take away is the plot for me this time around.
7/10
