Up Review

Up (2009)

Directed By: Pete Docter

"Adventure is out there!"

Carl's life turns upside down when his wife Ellie passes away. The film is the journey of Carl processing grief and fulfilling a promise he made to Ellie. Through this adventure, he finds himself in the middle of a new one! Russell arrives at his doorstep looking for help. Hoping that assisting Carl can help him collect his last merit badge. Can Carl fulfill his promise to Ellie? What's to become of Carl and Russell?

The first few minutes of the film read turbulently. We see the life of Carl and Ellie. We see the romance, friendship, challenges, and even the farewell. We see Carl completely brought to life by the adventurous spirit of his partner Ellie. Until life, cruelly takes her away. The film elapses like pages from the Adventure Book. Giving us the account of Carl's grief and how broken and bitter he feels. His pain, he hides behind a mask of an old grumpy man. Which others aren't aware of. He's protective of everything left behind of Ellie's. He decides to evade at the most opportune time, to fulfill a promise he made to Ellie. What he doesn't count on is Russell stowing away. Russell comes into the picture at an important moment. He helps bring a fresh perspective to Carl's world.

I love this film! It's symbolic in many perspectives. It's an emotional rollercoaster that gives one a perspective of grief but finding the next adventure when you least expect it. The story is fueled by the unexpected, adventure, but most importantly love. Love in the pursuit of discovery. Love in learning to cease the adventure of life but mostly the progress one makes to get there. Beautiful story.
