Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) Review

Ferris Bueller's Day Off [1986]

Directed by: John Hughes

It was coughing, sweats and possibly drawing red spots on my face to get out of going to middle school. 🤣 Then again, my little schemes failed because I'm not the master of shenanigans as Ferris is!

This is numero 9 for Ferris. 8 times so far ,is his success rate in calling in sick. This being his latest he sets out to make it a memorable one! He hooks in his best friend Cameron and Sloane, his girl for a day off! Principal Rooney is not as easily convinced as his parents are. He suspects he's lying and hopes to finally catch him in his scheme! Bueller's sister Jeannie is also wise on his plot. She is tired of continuously seeing Ferris succeed in his mischief. She's ready to set the record straight but for this to happen she needs proof. Will Ferris succeed in making number 9 the best day ever for not only himself but his friends too?

I have seen this film before but decided to rewatch it. I believe it's memorable because you have the hook will Ferris succeed? Seeing Rooney (creepy at that) hot on his trail and appearing to be one step ahead to find out Ferris is two ahead. The naive and accepting parents not as wise to him as his sister is. The premise of making it a memorable day. Ferris plays on our emotions of belonging and friendship. Taking it a step further each time.

For me, it was a small victory to see him win one over the snotty waiter/restaurant owner. I found that part to be my favorite. In the process he helps his friend Cameron break free from the grasp of a careless and vacant father. He gives him that one last nudge subconsciously to stand up for himself. There's a sense of freedom in Ferris. A freedom from routine and a true sense of spontaneity he harvests. You never know what he's thinking or what he's planning. He truly goes with the flow. Memorable and humorous, this one definitely will stand the test of time!
