Sabrina (1954)
Directed by: Billy Wilder
Sabrina is quite the dreamer. Her heart is set on reaching the moon. If by the moon you mean, having affections bordering infatuations on David Larrabee, the youngest son to the rich family her father chauffeurs for. It all started with a kiss. An innocent kiss shared in her younger days that set her heart to become so completely in love with the very name of David Larrabee. She watches from afar hoping one day he will cast his affections to her. However, David obviously will not. He's much to focused on life in the fast lane. Tying the knot with the chauffeur's daughter is the farthest thing on his mind. This crushes Sabrina ultimately setting her story to intertwine with the "cure" for her infatuated heart. The cure so to speak doesn't see the spark that begins to blossom when their paths interlock. His mind and attention is on business. The business that their family is wealthy in. The last thing he needs is love. In this story, you will see how love has a way of catching you rather unexpectedly. What will this story paint for it's audience? Will it catch us by surprise?
A tale as old as time about a girl so completely certain about her affections towards the man of her dreams. She's sure that this is her destiny! Only when she begins the process of learning to value herself, does she truly begin to understand what love is. This causes a ripple effect around her. Attracting the right person but as she soon notices it's not the one she was expecting either.
This story is romantic, endearing, charming, and just unanticipated. I love it so much. It's one of those films you watch after a long day at work or long month. No matter how many times I have watched this it still carries the same magic it had my first watch. This is my favorite Audrey Hepburn film. Perhaps, because it has a little bit of a Cinderella affect in the mist. Perhaps, because I like to believe in the unexpected gifts your personal journey bears fruit to.
I think the star in this film is Humphrey Bogart. His character Linus is one I realized after this most recent watch is what appeals to me. His character is stern, mysterious, but logical. He's certain life is already up and it's all work. There's no time to waste on things as trivial as love to him. While, trying to save the family from public embarrassment he swoons in on Audrey hoping to play a cruel joke on her to make her return back to Paris. However, in the process he begins to let down his guard and as certain as he was, there's no mistaking that love found it's way into his path. Again, the uncanny unanticipated surprise that he falls in love with Sabrina. It's romantic and to me logical. You can be as certain as you want but love has a way of catching you off guard. I love his character. I love that his journey does a spin on his heart. To me it's romantic.
Then again, I can't go without talking about Sabrina. Audrey is stand out in this role. She narrates her story well, their story alluring you almost like a fairy tale happening. That as many ups and downs she goes through she finds herself in the process. What is certain isn't always truth. She finds she too, has things to learn. That the most plainest box might have the biggest surprise. There's a scene where she tries to reassure herself that David is the one for her. She begs him to speak to her and kiss her but the spark is gone. Her heart has moved on to Linus. She can't escape it no matter how hard she tries to be with David. David just wasn't meant to be with her. It's a cruel irony but a poetic one. I love the rawness to her character. The troubled waters she fights within herself to ultimately discover herself.
It's a beautiful story filled with romance, comedy, and chemistry. It's about finding love in the most unexpected place. About finding yourself and learning to really value yourself as a person. Learning to stand your ground. Learning to be real with yourself. Learning to let go of all reservations and all those walls we hide behind to guard ourselves. It's about finding yourself and in the process finding love. Learning to continually grow within your path. That all you know might not be all you know. That life is full of unexpected junctures. They may not what we anticipated but they sure will bring us new growth in the years to come. Isn't it romantic? I think so.
