The Loveless (1981) Review

The Loveless [1981]

Directed by: Kathryn Bigelow and Monty Montgomery

Cigarette smoke and rebellion rolls into a small southern town on its way to Daytona lined in leather. In their world, it's life on the fast line and not everyone takes kindly to their spirit of freedom. Their reputations much to the surprise of them are one's we have seen painted on screen. The locals from the small town make it aware to them that they are not welcome and to beat it fast.

However, uncertainty rolls in a red and white Chevy. She catches Vance's attention. Her jubilant spirit is broken, etched with pain from a ruined past. She has a history of pain and an attitude at the world who sent her out. She finally is armed with valor and takes a stand taking back her life from the root of her agony. Her anguished pleas are tragically silenced and memory remains. As her story, paints the back drop of this tale.

In a world where the 50s aesthetic runs wild will the gang ever make it to Daytona and what lessons can they teach the locals?

Have you ever watched a film and from the opening credits you knew you're going to love it or it's going to impact you a certain way? This film presents quite an interesting vision. I perceived it differently. I see the gang obviously proud of the image their persona signifies but inescapably being able to ride from it. It carries through the film and it's obvious they are not wanted. In a world where love is just a stop away can they find it. Whether it's in themselves or from another. A great yet tragic story that is brilliantly presented through a stand out cast, fantastic soundtrack, and overall ambience this film carries.

9/10
