Why Vincent Price?

Updated: Mar 3, 2020

My love and respect for Vincent Price began with a very recognizable role to many die hard fans of his. However, he did have an impact on me and it took some piecing together to gather that story.

I remember being 4 years old and dancing along to Thriller when the music video would come on TV. I found his voice haunting when I would hear his narration. Ironically, that same voice I'd hear again in one of my many favorite childhood films, The Great Mouse Detective. The nefarious Professor Ratigan!!! I still at a younger age couldn't put two and two together. It was that very same "haunting" voice that voiced Ratigan.

When I finally took notice, it was in House on Haunted Hill. There was this elegance to his role as Frederick Loren. He had this magnetic persona I just couldn't place. The actor had and left a profound impression on me. After I saw this movie, I began my research on the actor who played Frederick Loren. I eagerly searched for more films. My quest led me to various films ranging from 'The Bat' all the way back to the first film I mentioned earlier. I rewatched The Great Mouse Detective and I hear his whimsical voice sing The World's Greatest Criminal Mind.

Vincent Price had a magnetic presence in his films ranging from small roles to larger more recognizable roles. Years go by and he still holds a place as my favorite actor. He was a magnificent actor and his legendary status proceeds to grow with time. My love for horror started the first time I saw House on Haunted Hill.

It aesthetically engaged my attention from a mystery angle. It had a very memorable cast. The setting was profound. The cinematography was classic and visually engaging. For all these reasons and more this film goes down in horror history as well as attracted a die hard cult following. Years later still holds my attention.

So, this entry is a homage to the actor and role that began it all. My love for horror and his filmography. House on Haunted Hill is a source for heavy referencing in films, music, cartoons, and etc... It also helped blossom my love for horror and attraction to classic horror. The aesthetic and plots all began with a night stay at the "haunted" Loren house and left it's impression on me for years and years to come.
